2006 U.S World Sandcastle Contest
Sunday July 23rd Imperial Beach California
The 2006 Imperial Beach World Sandcastle competition was one of the largest yet with an estimated 350,000 visitors attending the three day event. The U.S. Sandcastle competition started in the late 1970's when a group of Imperial Beach leaders visited and attended the White Rock Sandcastle Contest in British Columbia.
Thye first event was held in 1981 with a total of $4,400 in prize winnings. This year in 2006 the prize winnings were more than $23,000 and proceeds raised went to the local Boy's & Girl's Club in the area.
